Smeal's Migration to Plone
Migrating Content
Smeal began with what was mostly static web pages; however, since content was consistently formatted for the most part, the Smeal Web team was able to pull thousands of pages into Plone automatically using our WebSlinger product.
Workflow
Smeal tends to be an early adopter of technology, and many of Smeal’s faculty and staff contribute to the site. Plone’s workflow features make this manageable by directing vital content through a vetting process before it hits the public. Smeal has customized Plone’s out-of-box workflows to make them fit the college's administrative structure.
Server Infrastructure
Smeal first deployed
Plone on Linux partitions on an IBM mainframe. Today, the college runs several
different Plone sites on a homegrown VMWare ESX cluster (similar to WebLion Hosting). The Web team manages load-balancing and caching using Pound and Squid.
