AJAX eats my children

...or at least my Back button

I was reading a good article at paulgraham.com today, where the reader comments are paginated with a little AJAX jigger. I was initially pleased with the quick load time of the comment pages. However, after visiting a link in one of the comments on page 3, I was unpleasantly surprised to find that my Back button took me back to page 1. State? Gone!

Developers, when you bust out the AJAX, take care not to break the user experience. Most things on the web are still best represented by the good ol' page metaphor, and developers should think long and hard before pretending the web isn't stateless. (And then, if you do choose to go the stateful route, do it thoroughly!)

Inflammatorily yours,

Erik
