Smeal College of Business

One of WebLion’s first partners showcases mass-migration and workflow.

The Smeal College of Business website at Penn StateThe Smeal College of Business began its collaboration with WebLion in 2005 and remains one of our heaviest users of Plone.

Migrating to Plone

Smeal began with a mostly static web site, but, since their content was relatively consistently formatted, they were able to pull thousands of pages into Plone automatically using our WebSlinger product.

Using workflow

Smeal tends to be an early adopter of technology, and many of Smeal’s faculty and staff contribute to the site. Plone’s workflow features make this manageable by directing vital content through a vetting process before it hits the public. Smeal has customized Plone’s out-of-box workflows to make this precisely fit their administrative structure.

Server infrastructure

College of Business Server Block DiagramSmeal first deployed Plone on Linux partitions on an IBM mainframe. Today, they run several different Plone sites on a homegrown VMWare ESX cluster (like WebLion Hosting uses), load-balancing and caching using Pound and Squid.
