Food Science
A tale of pluggable branding
The College of Agricultural Sciences is one of Penn State’s largest, comprising 12 academic units. When the entire college became a WebLion partner, the units wanted to maintain some semblance of aesthetic individuality while still providing navigational consistency and some sort of college-wide visual branding. Toward this, Tim Simkins, a developer with Ag Sciences, wrote the agCommon Plone theme.
agCommon provides the overall look of Ag Sciences sites, including breadcrumbs leading back to the college level, slots for dynamically generated by-audience navigation, and AD54-compliant search. It also brings a custom home page template with spots for a randomly rotating header graphic and a custom footer treatment, typically provided by a unit-specific theme product installed alongside it. Take a look at some other agCommon-using sites to get the idea:
Ag Science currently runs most of its sites on its own quad-core server but will soon migrate to WebLion Hosting for easier maintenance; vetsci.psu.edu is on Hosting already.
